Pancake Breakfast 2005

On Tuesday 8^th Feb, the Junior School held a Pancake Breakfast for students, parents and grandparents. Breakfast began at 8.30am and pancakes were made and served with a variety of toppings. Fruit was also served.

Students took part in a colouring competition and literacy and numeracy activities were conducted around the pancake theme.

We welcomed a number of families who joined us from our local Pre Schools.

School Picnic

At the beginning of each year we ask our families to join the students for a picnic lunch at the Reg Harris Reserve. The students and teachers walk down to the reserve where lunch is eaten and games are played. We all enjoy this picnic and it is a delight to see our parents and pre school students enjoying it as well.

Art Show 2004

Our Art Show showcased the excellent and creative art work undertaken by the students during their Art sessions. Every student made one or more contributions to the display. The art works were judged by Cr. Joy Banerji who also officially opened the Art Show and presented the winners with rosettes.

Prep/Grade 6 Buddy Program

At Amsleigh Park we undertake a Buddy System for Preps as well as students coming into the school at other levels.

The new Prep students meet their buddies on Orientation Day and these buddies work with the Preps at various times throughout the year, as well as being available to assist them in the school yard where required. The Grade 6 students take time each day towards the beginning of the year, to seek out their Prep buddy to ensure they are coping with the demands of school. The Grades 6 and Preps undertake activities during school time, but these become less frequent as the year progresses and the Prep students become more independant.

Flag Raising Ceremony

On Tuesday 22nd February, the Federal Member of Parliament, Anna Burke, visited Amsleigh Park in order to provide the school with an Australian flag to hoist on the school's new flag pole. The flag pole has been made available to the school as a result of the Federal Government's Flagpoles for Schools initiative - where schools that don't have a flag pole were invited to apply for a grant.

Anna Burke presented Amsleigh Park's School Captains, Dulani and Aaron, with a new flag which was promptly hoisted in front of the students and a large body of parents.

Whole School Maths Day

Once a year, we hold a day where the students work with those from other classes to solve mathematical problems. There are a variety of activities and the students rotate every hour to enable them to experience all areas. This year activities involved Chance and Data, Measuring, Patterns and Puzzles, Symmetry, Space and Grid Coordinates. As well as having fun, the students were challenged in their mathematical thinking.

Prep Excursion to Chesterfield Farm

As part of the Integrated Curriculum program, the Prep classes visited Chesterfield Farm. As many of the children had not previously had the experience of visiting a farm, they had a wonderful time seeing, holding, nursing and learning about farm animals.

Moomba Celebrations

Grades 3 qnd 4 celebrated Moomba through their Integrated Curriculum program. This unit of work involved Literacy, Numeracy, Technology, the Arts and Social studies.

Included in the album are a collection of photos taken at the completion of the unit when the students took part in a Moomba day which involved all the work they had undertaken during the unit.

Junior School Easter Bonnet Parade

The students in Grades Prep, One and Two, all made Easter Bonnets at school and took part in an Easter Bonnet parade. The students had been studying celebrations this term and also Easter was discussed as part of the Religious Education program.

The parade was a fun way to complete the Easter theme and to showcase the art work they had accomplished with their bonnets.

Student Leadership Team visit Parliament House

March the Student Leadership Team went on an excursion to Parliament House in order to learn about and experience what it means to be a leader and to represent others. Our local Member of Parliament, Anne Barker, was responsible for inviting the Student Leadership Team and for escorting them around Parliament House. As part of the Integrated Curriculum, the students in Grades 1 and 2 attended an incursion on the Science of Toys. The demonstrator showed the students how toys worked and how to do exciting activities using simple everyday toys.

Teddy Bear's Picnic

As part of our Arts Program, every student has a singing, dancing or dramatic part in our Whole School Production. This year we performed "The Three Little Pigs and the Big Bored Wolves". This production involves both the Performing Arts and Visual Arts sections of our curriculum.

Primary Schools Chess Tournament

Premiers Reading Challenge Ambassador Visit

As part of the Premier's Reading Challenge, Amsleigh Park was invited to take part in an ambassador visit to the school. As we have all our Grades 5 and 6 students, and quite a number of our Grades 3 and 4 students taking part in this challenge, we were very proud to be a part of this extra activity.

On the 12th July, we were visited by Danny Katz (well known author and writer for The Age), Anne Barker (State Member for Oakleigh), Dr. Jim Watterston (Eastern Metropolitan Regional Director) and Cathy Dickinson (Curriculum Project Officer for Eastern Metropolitan Region). The students were fascinated with the talk given by Danny Katz who also read some of his stories to them. They asked a number of excellent questions and are now inspired to write their own book to be called "Recess Rulz". Anne Barker kindly donated a set of Danny's books to the school which was most appreciated.

Science Day

The whole school joined together to undertake science activities for the whole day. It was certainly a fun day with great learning opportunities for all students. It was a joy to see the excitement on the student's faces as they tried our experiments and learnt new scientific information. Activities included: Sound, Light and Colour, Floating and Sinking, Can Rolling and Nature Art.

Grade 3 and 4 at Camp Manyung

This year, the students in Grades 3 and 4 spent 3 days at Camp Manyung in Mount Eliza. Although the weather was fairly cold, it did not rain during the day while the outside activities were underway. The food and accommodation were good and the students had a wonderful time extending their skills and undertaking some quite difficult challenges. The group worked together as a team to have a very happy camp.

Trivia Night

To raise funds for the school in a fun way and to bring parents and staff together, the Fundraising Committee held a Trivia Night. The Oakleigh RSL donated the room and all the prizes were also donated. It was a great night that was enjoyed by all.

Student Leadership Halloween Day

On Friday 28th October, the Student Leadership Team organised a Halloween Day. Students, staff and parents were encouraged to come to school wearing a variety of Halloween outfits. The entire school community had a great time not only dressing up in their favourite Halloween attire but also parading around the school in their special outfits.

School Captains Attend a Youth Forum

On Friday 17th February, our School Captains were invited to attend a Youth Forum with the local Member of Parliament for Oakleigh, Ann Barker, and the Minister for Youth Affairs and Education Services, Jacinta Allan. The forum was devised in order for Ann and Jacinta to gather information about the concerns and needs of the youth in the Oakleigh area.

We are extremely proud of our School Captains as they were exceptionally organised and confidently presented the issues in which their peers (the rest of the Year 5/6 students) had previously worked on.

Whole School Picnic

On Thursday 23rd February the entire school communty got together at Reg Harris Reserve for our annual school picnic. The picnic is a marvelous means for the students, staff and parents/grandparents to come together in order to have some fun and spend some time together as a school community. On Monday 6th March our school held a community picnic and games night. The event was a huge success with so many staff, students, parents, grandparents, uncles and aunties attending in order to participate in the picnic and to join in the fun and games. The evening was coorganised by the Fundraising Committee as well as the school's Physical Education Teacher. All of the people who attended joined in various games and activities and as illustarted in the photographs, everyone had a ball!

Lunchtime activities

At Amsleigh Park we believe that learning occurs at all times. As a result we have various lunch time clubs in which the students can participate in. On Monday there is the Chess Club, Tuesday Gymnastics and Wednesday the Art Club. Twice a term we also have organised staff versus students games - which are always fun!

Year Preps attend their first excursion to Chesterfield Farm

On Tuesday 4th April the Year Prep students attended their first excursion. The children ventured to Chesterfield Farm where they spent the day learning about farm life. During this time they were able to watch a working farm dog round up sheep, touch, feel, smell and feed a variety of farm animals and they even had a go at milking a cow! All in all it was a wonderful learning experience which was thoroughly enjoyed by all!

Back to School Day

On Tuesday 9th May Amsleigh Park Primary School celebrated Back to School Day which is an initiative or program that reconnects past students with their government school and it really is a celebration of the achievements of both the government school and the individuals who have gone on to bigger and better things as a result of being educated in our government system.

Amsleigh Park have organised for 4 ex-students who were all in the same year level and have all now gone on to become police officers to participate in the program. The Officer's are all Senior Constables and their names are: Janine Saunders, Daniel Sirianni, Leigh Wadeson and Brett Nield. Their last year at Amsleigh Park Primary School (formerly East Oakleigh Primary was in 1983). Daniel, Janine and Leigh have been friends since Year Prep and Brett joined them in Year 4.

They had lost contact after primary school as they headed to different secondary schools, however their paths crossed again when they realised each had joined Victoria Police. Leigh and Janine crossed paths whilst undertaking their training at the Police Academy.

Brett recognised a familiar face (Janine) when he was appointed to his first police station. Daniel also worked with Janine and the dots were joined together.

The children were fascinated about their story when it was first mentioned at a school assembly and were very interested to not only be visited by Police Officers but also by ex-students from our school.

The staff have also been intrigued by this story and when you think that out of more than 11,000 police members there are 4 who all came from the same class, the same year level and also the same school - it is absolutely amazing!!

The Officers spent time with each Area of the school and the students will be given the opportunity to ask them questions about the school which they have spent some time thinking about - (how has it changed, what teachers were here in your time, what subjects did you learn, did you have computers at the school, did you play sport against other schools, did you have to wear a uniform etc).

Back to School Day culminated with a school assembly where the current School Captains (Julian and Nadia) presentedhe Officers with certificates, letters of thanks and a copy of the latest Year Book and Calendar.

All in all it was a really interesting and fascinating day for all members of the Amsleigh Park Primary School community.

The staff, students and parents at Amsleigh Park Primary School are very grateful to Janine, Daniel, Leigh and Brett for agreeing to participate in the program and for their respective Senior Sergeants for providing them with the time and opportunity to be involved.

Chess Program

On Tuesday 16th May 11 students from the school's Chess Program participated in the Monash Zone Interschool Chess Tournament which was held at Caulfield Grammar. The aim of the tournament is for the children to put into practice the skills, tehniques and tactics they have learnt through their chess coach in a friendly yet competitive situation. The winner from each zone is then eligible to participate in the state finals. Our school's chess program commenced in Term Two 2005 and we are very proud to report that we won the Monash Zone and are now preparing for the state finals. Congratulations and well done to all of the stduents who participated, our coach, Fred Roberg, and Chess Program coordinator (Assistant Principal) Frank Catalano. Education Week 2006

The entire Amsleigh Park Primary School community celebrated Education Week by conducting various activities throughout the entire week. On Monday the Year 3- 6 students were visited by Garry from Wheelchair Sports Victoria who shared with them how he became wheelchair bound, how it has impacted on his life and how he has now gone on to become a champion hand cyclist. The students even had a turn of playing wheelchair basketball which was a real eye opener for many of them! On Tuesday the students celebrated Back to School Day (refer to seperate photo albulm). On Weddnesday the Student Leadership Team implemented various sporting activities for the students. On Thursday the children were thrilled by the performance of the Cosentino Brother's Magical Illusion show and this was followed by the Year 3/4 students playing a game of basketball against the teachers. Friday was Loud Shirt Day with many of the students, staff and parents coming to school wearing loud shirts in order to raise money for the Deafness Foundation.

School Aerobics Team

The Amsleigh Allstars is Amsleigh Park's first ever aerobics team. Monique, Teleisha, Julia, Maitrayee, Alyssa and Keeley competed in the Schoolaerobics competition at the Camberwell Civic Centre on Sunday 21st May.

The goal of SCHOOLAEROBICS, which runs the competition, is to provide Primary and Secondary school students with an avenue to improve their fitness, confidence, health and self esteem through participation in a healthy and fun competition.

The girls have certainly improved their personal fitness with practices throughout the week and also after school. Many lunchtimes were devoted to learning then improving the routine. Coached by Miss Hayes, Miss Sferlazza and Mrs Jeffery, with the assistance of Bryony, our team worked very hard on their routine and can be very proud of their competition debut.

Amsleigh Park had one of the loudest cheer squads and we appreciate the support of families and friends who came along on Sunday to support our team. Our thanks also to Nadia and Aisha who introduced our team, Donna for her assistance with hair, Monica, Thelma, Lorelle and Jan Goodwin for their sewing and to everyone else who encouraged and supported us.

Did they have fun? The team is keen to start practicing for the Spring Competition, but the teachers need a week off first!

Student Leadership Teams' Game Day 2006

On Thursday 25th May the Student Leadership Team held their Game Day - a day in which the students were able to bring a game to school to share and play with their friends. On this day many games were brought to school such as board games, electronical games and even dress-up equipment. All in all, it was another really fun day at school in which the Student Leadership Team and the entire school community had fun particpating in.

RESPECT Program

Students from 3B have been working with residents from the Oak Towers Aged Care Facility in a program that has the following aims:

To foster and develop appropriate relationships and respect between primary aged students and elderly members of society
For the students to develop an understanding of the life and times of an elderly person
To develop the technological skills of both parties
To develop the interview skills of students
To develop a positive relationship with the nursing home in which the elderly residents reside
To demonstrate to the wider community the benefits of students and the elderly working together

The program has been a huge success with the students and their "older friend" working together to produce a PowerPoint presentation.

Minster for Education and Training visits Amsleigh Park

On Tuesday the 11th July the Minister for Education and Training, Lynne Kosky visited our school. She spent the morning in classrooms assisting the teachers with the Early Years Literacy Program and then had morning tea with the staff. Overall the visit was a huge success with the Minister commenting on all of the wonderful programs we implement at Amsleigh Park. Please spend some time previewing the photographs of the event.

Student Leadership

Our school leadership team consists of 2 School Captains, 8 House Captains, two for each house, as well as the members of our Junior School Council who arerepresentatives from each class.

This year the Student Leadership Team will have a higher profile with the students being involved in a number of activities to allow them to learn the skills to become very good leaders.

The development of leadership skills is a very important component of our school's Student Wellbeing and Engagement programs.

Chess Club

Student Leadership Team's Amsleigh Idols Talent Event

On Friday 18th November the Student Leadership Team held their very first Amsleigh Idols talent event. Students from all year levels performed in front of the entire school including parents, grandparents, uncles and aunties. The event was a huge success with so many wonderful performances from so many really talented students. The event has become so popular that it is now a permanent ficture in the Amsleigh park Primary School calendar.

Wow, the longest easter egg line - what's that all about?

Each year, just before Easter, the students are asked to bring along some Easter Eggs with the intention of collecting enough eggs to create prizes for the Easter raffle. Every year so many wonderful hampers are created and then the raffle is drawn.

On May 23rd Gary Ryan (from Organisations That Matter) and also a parent at our school ran a very interesting and innovating leadership skills development program for the students in the Student Leadership Team. His session focused such key issues as:

- what makes a good leader?

- what are the qualities of a good leader?

- how can we train ourselves to be good leaders?

Amsleigh Olympics 2008

On Friday 8th August the Amsleigh Olympics began with the traditional reading of the oath, parade of nations and the national anthem of China. The students then represented countries from around the world in team sports, including soccer, softball, table tennis and volleyball.

Andy Hogan Presentation

A letter from Andy Hogan:

On December 4^th I have been given the opportunity to represent Victoria in the Under 14 1500m race walk in Canberra at the Pacific School Games. I will be representing Amsleigh Park Primary School. Although this will be a fantastic experience it will also be an expensive one too. For example my family and I have to pay for accommodation, airfare, team uniform and other fees. Without the support from everyone here this would not have been possible for me to attend.

On the 6^th November Amsleigh Park Primary School held a casual clothes day to raise money for myself to put towards Canberra. The support was fantastic and the money raised from this has paid for my uniform. So on behalf of my family and myself I would like to thank the staff and Student Leadership Team for organising the fundraiser and also thank the children who participated and their families. Lastly I would like to thank all of you for supporting me and in return I will do my best to make you all proud.

Kiwanis "Terric Kids" Awards - Term 1

We are pleased to have the "Terrific Kids" program in our school, whick is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club. The recipients of the Terrific Kids wards for Term 1 are Ruby Sunnucks (2C) and Alicia La Greca (2S). They were presented with their certificates by Beni Avallone (secretary of the Kiwanis Bayside Internet Club) at the school assembly on 3rd April 2009.
